What Happened in Philly College Sports Football This Weekend?
Temple 34 Miami (Ohio) 32
Brandon Mc Manus was good on an 18 yard field goal attempt with 3 seconds remaining to give Temple the win. The Owls lead 31 – 13 with 2:37 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Miami stormed back behind Quarterback Zac Dysert to take a 32 – 31 lead with 2:36 left in the game.
Temple won its seventh consecutive game and is in first place in the MAC Eastern Division. The last time Temple won 7 straight games was in 1973 under Coach Wayne Hardin. The Owls won 8 straight that season. The seven wins are the most in a season since 1990 when Temple finished 7 – 4, and the win guarantees Temple’s first winning season since then. Temple is Bowl Eligible.
Running Back Bernard Pierce ran for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns on 40 carries (his season tying high number of carries). It was Pierce’s sixth 100 – yard rushing performance this season and is his thrid consecutive. Pierce is Temple’s all time Freshman rusher with 1,211 yards, and is now the 4th leading rusher in Temple’s single season list. He has 14 touchdowns, 1 behind the season record of 15 held by Paul Palmer (1986) and Walter Washington (2004). Pierce’s 3 touchdowns was his fifth multi-touchdown game, and was the second time he ran for 3 touchdowns. The other time was Temple’s win at Toledo.
Red Shirt Sophomore Quarterback Chester Stewart got his first start of the season and the 4th in his career.
Temple is 7 -2 this season, 5 -0 in the MAC
Villanova 21 Richmond 20
Villanova Wide Receiver Brandyn Harvey made a one-handed catch of Chris Whitney’s 4th down pass for 29 yards and a touchdown with 59 seconds left. The catch allowed Villanova to beat #1 Richmond 21 – 20 at Richmond.
Chris Whitney threw 3 touchdown passes. He went 21-34 for 277 yards, and had 1 intercepted. Harvey caught 6 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Richmond drove to the Villanova 17 with 10 seconds left, but Kicker Andrew Howard’s 35 yard field goal attempt was wide left.
Villanova beat Richmond for the second consecutive year. The Wildcats are 8 – 1, 5 – 1 in the CAA. Next week Villanova travels to Towson.
Penn 42 Princeton 7
Penn never trailed scoring on their first possession beating Princeton on Homecoming Day at Penn. Quarterback Kyle Olson was 20 of 31 passes for 238 yards and 3 touchdowns. Penn did not turn the ball over. Running Back Lyle Marsh ran for 99 yards on 12 carries.
This game was Penn’s number 1,301, the most in NCAA history. Penn now has beaten Princeton 3 straight times and have won 6 consecutive games, their longest streak since 2004.
Quarterback Kyle Olson threw 3 touchdown passes, a new career high. He threw 2 at Lafayette earlier this season. Corner Back Chris Wynn set a career high with 7 tackles. His interception was the 12th of his career and his first interception return for a touchdown.
Penn’s Defense haven’t allowed a 100 yard rusher in 21 games. Additionally, they haven’t allowed a rushing touchdown since the final play of the third quarter against Dartmouth, a span of 21 quarters. The defense hasn’t allowed a 300 yard passer in 23 games.
Penn remains undefeated in the Ivy League. Next week they meet undefeated Harvard in what should be a match for the Ivy League Championship.
